Probiotics: More Than Meets the Eye!

Probiotics: More Than Meets the Eye!

Did you know not all probiotics are created equal? If your dog is on a probiotic and it's not helping their stomach, they might be on one that isn't properly meshing with their gut flora. Read on to see if you need to make a change:

Lactic acid probiotics work well with dogs that have IBS and occasional diarrhea. We find these live cultures in things like kefir and greek yogurt, as they are lactobacillus bacteria. My dog has allergic reactions to beef and any type of dairy from a cow. Therefore, these don't work on him even if he has diarrhea.

Multi strain probiotics are just as you read, various different cultures. They help with chronic diarrhea, as they cover all your bases. Prescription diarrhea medications may help, but they also are often nothing but stool binders with no encouragement of adding proper gut flora back into your dog's system.

Soil based probiotics are my personal choice for Phoenix, since he has lots of allergies including dairy. Remember that the majority of probiotics on the shelf are dairy based, and if your dog can't handle ice cream or a pup cup, this one might be the best option!

Yeast based probiotics are not only dairy free and good for dogs with lots of allergies, but they're resistant to antibiotics. We often forget that when are dogs are taking a hardcore prescription, it does a number on their stomach. Even the best probiotic is often rendered ineffective and the stomach flora is destroyed - unless s. boulardii yeast is involved.

Is your dog taking a probiotic? If so, tell me which one! And never feel afraid to reach out if you want personalized help of any kind for your pet.
